In 2013, there were early reports of a movie focusing on Fett during the events of the original trilogy. Josh Trank, known then for his 2012 film Chronicle, had been brought on in 2014 to direct the stand-alone film. Unfortunately, word-of-mouth regarding issues on the set of The Fantastic Four reboot in 2015 would set off a chain of events ending in Trank leaving the project completely.

In an interview by Polygon, once details became known to Disney, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Trank himself agreed he shouldn’t appear at Star Wars Celebration 2015 to announce the Boba Fett film. This would escalate into Trank’s departure from the Star Wars project with some reports saying he was fired. Although Trank then stated he left for other opportunities, he now says it was an ultimatum: “I was going to be fired if I didn’t quit.”
Though Trank has struggled the past few years, his latest film Capone starring Tom Hardy will be releasing next week on May 12th. As for the Boba Fett film, it would eventually become the framework for The Mandalorian which will be getting a second season this October.
